BRISTOL, TN (June 17, 2017) - Fans came out in droves for Friday and Saturday’s qualifying session at the 17th Annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. For the Father/Son Gray Motorsports Valvoline Chevrolet Camaro team Friday evening qualifying would be anything but ideal.
During Q1, Friday afternoon Son Tanner Gray would experience a malfunction half way down the track as Father Shane Gray would have clutch issues and pedal to the finish line for an ET of 7.190 seconds at 192.38.
“My Gray Motorsports Valvoline Chevrolet Camaro car did not run as we expected,’ Tanner Gray said. “My guys will get it figured out and we will regroup for Q2.”
Q2, Friday evening Tanner Gray had trouble with his ECU and turned right around from the start line to head back to the pits where the crew immediately went to work to correct the issue. Shane Gray's clutch continued to give him problems leaving the Gray Motorsports crew with additional bugs to work out.
Saturday's 3rd Qualifying session would take a positive spin for the duo. Tanner Gray would finally make a solid pass with an ET of 6.77 seconds at 205.38 mph. Shane Gray would make an almost identical run at 6.76 seconds at 205.54 mph.
During Q4, Tanner Gray experienced additional car trouble and never successfully started the car, therefore had to push the car back to the pits and would reside in the 11th spot heading into tomorrow's eliminations.
“The Gray Motorsports team will head back to the pits and I am confident the crew will have a great race car ready for tomorrow’s eliminations.” Tanner Gray said after Q4
Shane Gray would make a successful Q4 run with an ET of 6.757 seconds at 203.80 mph qualifying him in the 10th spot for eliminations round 1.
